Chemist Cited for Development of Key Genetic Technologies

April 24, 1997

Lloyd M. Smith, professor of chemistry, has been cited by the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities for his efforts to develop automated DNA sequencing technologies. Smith received the association’s award for Outstanding Contributions to Biomolecular Technologies. Smith, who joined the faculty in 1987, is a world leader in the conceptualization, design and development of technologies vital to sequencing the genetic material of humans and other animals. His work has given scientists a fast and reliable method of DNA sequencing and helped speed up the pace of scientific understanding of basic biological processes.
