Chancellor Martin forms new student leader panel

October 22, 2010 By John Lucas

The Chancellor’s Panel of Student Leaders met for the first time on Oct. 20 in an effort to maintain strong communications between Chancellor Biddy Martin, campus administration and UW–Madison students.

The council is designed to provide Martin with an opportunity to stay in touch with students, listen to their concerns and learn from their perspectives. Students will be a sounding board for ideas and initiatives and serve as a conduit to share the ideas of the chancellor with their peers.

The group is made up of roughly 20 students appointed and identified through the School and College Dean’s Office, Housing, and the Wisconsin Union as well as through ASM Shared Governance. Student leaders represent a mixture of student government, student organizations, and other student leaders on campus. Dean of Students Lori Berquam also participates in leading the group in the chancellor’s absence. The group will meet regularly each semester.

“One of the things I enjoy most about the job is engaging with people,” Martin said.  “I have many meetings focused on administration, but this group is one more way for me to make sure I’m in contact with people who are very important to us — our students.”

This group is advisory, and is not a governance body, and will advise Provost Paul M. DeLuca Jr., as well as the university’s other vice chancellors.
