Campus police employees recognized for service

April 6, 1999 By

Twenty-five University Police Department employees have received Excellent Service commendations.

Police Chief Susan Riseling was honored for efforts to create a vision statement that included a goal of making UW–Madison a national leader in campus policing, security services and law enforcement methods.

In presenting the award, UW System President Katharine Lyall noted that the chief has become nationally recognized as a leader in her field. In 1997, she was elected to the executive board of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and in 1998 she became president of the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives, an organization that she co-founded.

Also, university detective Harlan Hettrick received a Meritorious Service award for his consistently high level of service to the community. Hettrick organized the department’s One-A-Week blood donor club – the only such club among Dane County law enforcement agencies. Under Hettrick’s leadership, the department has met its goal of 52 pints annually for several years. In 1998, club members gave 68 pints of blood to the Red Cross.
