Billups headed to Georgetown University

March 21, 2007

LaMarr Billups, senior special assistant to the chancellor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, has accepted a position at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., the UW–Madison Office of the Chancellor announced today (March 21).

Billups has served as a special assistant to two UW–Madison chancellors, David Ward and John D. Wiley, and has been the director of community relations for the past 11 years. He will begin his new position as assistant vice president for business policy planning at Georgetown in mid-May, providing leadership and expertise on a variety of labor-related issues.

“LaMarr has helped the university build and sustain a tremendously productive relationship with the broader Dane County community,” says Wiley. “His integrity, credibility and concern for the Madison area have helped us build bridges and extend the university’s influence through the Wisconsin Idea. His contributions here will be missed, but they have produced lasting benefits for the entire community.”

“I have tremendous appreciation for the experience I have gained and opportunities that I have had during my time here,” Billups says. “Although it will be very difficult to leave the area and my work with many of higher education’s premier administrators and teachers, I personally view this as a capstone opportunity that I simply could not pass up.”

While at UW–Madison, Billups managed the relationships between the university and local governments, especially the Madison Office of the Mayor and city departments. He has represented the chancellor and university while serving on key city and county committees, including the Alcohol License Review Committee, Transport 2020, and the city of Madison’s Streetcar Study and Civil Rights Department Ad Hoc committees. He served personally and for the university as a member of boards of directors involving the Overture Center for the Arts, the Urban League of Greater Madison, Edgewood College and the Collaboration Council — Capital Region.

Billups is a member of 100 Black Men of Madison Inc. and a lifetime member of the local NAACP and has been involved in many other community interests.

Dawn Crim will serve as acting director of community relations.
