May 15, 2003 By John Lucas

Lori M. Berquam has been named associate dean of students at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

The associate dean serves as chief judicial affairs officer, directs the Student Advocacy and Judicial Affairs Team, shares a leadership role in strategic planning efforts for the DOS division and represents Dean of Students Luoluo Hong in her absence.

Berquam has been serving as assistant dean of students at UW–Madison, managing the university’s response to student academic and non-academic misconduct issues. She also provided ombudsman services and crisis support for students.

“Lori brings a high level of competence, caring and integrity to this position,” says Hong. “With more than 15 years in the student affairs profession at four different campuses, she will bring a wealth of experience and add greatly to our division’s capacity to foster student learning and success. I also really appreciate her sense of humor – you need that in abundance when doing this kind of work.”

“I’m honored to be serving UW in this capacity,” Berquam says. “I’m excited about the priorities and initiatives for the division and the dedicated colleagues working on these critical issues.”

Prior to joining the Dean of Students office, Berquam served as assistant residence life director in University Housing. She supervised the Lakeshore area dorms between 1995-2002, after coming to UW–Madison from UW-Whitewater. She has also held housing posts at James Madison University and the University of California-Los Angeles.

Berquam holds an undergraduate degree from Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State) and a master’s degree from UW-La Crosse. She’s currently pursuing Ph.D. courses in higher education at UW–Madison.

She will fill the position held on an interim basis by Don Schutt, director of the Office of Human Resource Development, and will begin her responsibilities June 1. Her salary will be $84,000.

The Office of the Dean of Students administers a range of programs and services designed to support the university’s 40,000 students. Among the many responsibilities of the position are fostering a healthy and diverse campus climate, advocating for student needs and providing crisis support services.
