Athletic Board narrows choice for new women’s sport

February 27, 1998

In 1999, UW–Madison women athletes will begin playing either ice hockey, water polo or lacrosse.

The Athletic Board has arrived at those three sports in its decision to add a women’s varsity sport to begin competition next fall.

A meeting on March 3, 7-8:30 p.m., in the McClain Center Auditorium, will address the board’s decision. Attendees will have an opportunity to lobby the committee for one of the three finalists and ask questions about the decision process.

The board’s Planning and Equity Committee will choose one sport to recommend to the Athletic Board by March 17. On April 17, the full Athletic Board will meet to approve the new sport.

A coach for the new sport would be hired this summer, and the sport’s first competitive year would be 1999-2000.
