Arts Institute plans exhibition, symposium

The University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Arts Institute presents a special exhibition and symposium in conjunction with university artist-in-residence Matthew Buckingham’s seminar and workshop, “Representing the Past in Media & Art.”

This group event includes an exhibition of student artwork and films and a symposium featuring student presentations of written works. The symposium will be held on Wednesday, May 3, in two sessions: 2-4:30 p.m. and 5:30-7 p.m. The reception and exhibition opening will be held from 7-10 p.m. The exhibition and short film screenings will then run through Sunday, May 7. All events will be held in Vilas Hall, 821 University Ave.

Buckingham received his bachelor of arts degree in film production and film studies from the University of Iowa in 1988, and in 1996 he completed a master of fine arts degree at Bard College. His work, including films, drawings and photographs, has been shown at numerous museums and galleries around the world, including the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig, Vienna, Austria; the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden; the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Modern Art; and the PS 1 Contemporary Art Center, New York.

Buckingham’s residency is sponsored by the Department of Communication Arts and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art and co-sponsored by the Department of Art History, the Department of Art and the Visual Culture Cluster. Buckingham is in residence under the auspices of the Arts Institute Interdisciplinary Arts Residency Program, which brings world-class artists to campus to teach interdepartmental, for-credit courses and to perform or exhibit work for campus and community audiences.
