Arrested Development to headline All-Campus Party concert

April 29, 2003

The student-planned All-Campus Party 2003 at UW–Madison will draw to a close at the Memorial Union Terrace on Saturday, May 3, with an unprecedented 10-hour concert event headlined by Arrested Development.

Though the group officially called it quits in 1996, its members’ legendary closeness brings them back together for events such as the concert on the Terrace.

The band, founded by Todd Thomas (a.k.a. Speech), emerged as an alternative rap group in 1992 with radio-friendly, catchy hits including “Mr. Wendel,” “Tennessee,” and a part-cover, part-sample tune, “People Everyday.” Their debut album, “3 Years, 5 Months and 2 Days in the Life Of,” placed an emphasis on African-American history and empowerment, and was quickly followed up by a popular MTV Unplugged album in 1993.

The Saturday concert runs from 2 p.m.-midnight. Arrested Development is scheduled to play at 10 p.m.

In addition to Arrested Development, the concert will feature local and regional bands, including His and Her Vanities, Blood Brothers, The Tossers, Kadence, Phat Phunktion, Binary Star and the winner of the All-Campus Party Battle of the Bands contest on Thursday, May 1. All students, faculty and community residents are invited to attend.

“Our partnership with the Wisconsin Union Directorate was critical in planning this first-ever Terrace event,” All-Campus Party director Adam Sheridan says. “Getting Arrested Development was a huge coup in itself, but we’re also delivering 10 hours of music and eight bands. The concert promises the campus community a little fun in the sun and an event to remember for years to come.”

The third-annual All Campus Party is a cost-free and alcohol-free celebration created by the Wisconsin Alumni Student Board, a student-run organization of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. The festivities continue through Saturday, May 3, and feature many free events, including a film festival, Breakfast on Bascom and a pizza lunch on Library Mall.

All Campus Party partners include The Badger Herald, The Daily Cardinal, University Housing, Wisconsin Union Directorate and the Greek Community. It is funded by its sponsors, including the Wisconsin Alumni Association, Charter Communications, Associated Students of Madison, the Office of the Chancellor, 105.1 The Buzz and Coca-Cola.
