Red Cross in Need of Blood Donors
Contracts allow UW employees reasonable time off work, during work time, to donate blood at the closest blood center to their work unit. The donation center closest to campus is at Union South, Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

After-hours donations can be made at the Johnson Building on the far east side next to the Group Health Cooperative; the west side facility is near Hill Farms. For a schedule and locations of mobile donation sites, call 233-9300, Ext. 357.

Creative Arts Awards
The Arts Institute is now accepting applications and nominations for the following awards:

  • Faculty Research: Arts Institute Creative Arts Award and the Emily Mead Baldwin-Bascom Professorship in the Creative Arts
  • Faculty and Staff Outreach: Joyce J. and Gerald A. Bartell Award in the Arts
  • Graduate Student Achievement: David and Edith Sinaiko Frank Graduate Fellowship for a Woman in the Arts

Deadline for applications is Nov. 10. Interdisciplinary Arts Residency Program
The Arts Institute is now accepting nominations for the Interdisciplinary Arts Residency Program for residencies beginning in 2004-05 and after. Funded by the Cluster Hires Initiative, the program enables the Arts Institute to support a series of extended residencies each year for the benefit of all arts departments and programs of the university. The program is interdisciplinary in nature and enables innovative artists to work with students on more ambitious projects, providing course credit and strengthening programmatic ties among departments.

Classified Staff Child Care Scholarship
Two recipients will be selected by the University Child Care Committee subcommittee to each receive a $500 award to reimburse child-care costs of regulated providers. Scholarships are given to currently employed permanent classified employees. Applications should be submitted to the Office of Campus Child Care, 611 Eagle Heights, Room 148, by Saturday, Nov. 1. Individuals interested in learning more about how this program is funded should contact Connie Wilson, clwilson@bascom.wisc.edu.

Dean Kenneth Davis Review
To maintain excellence in administrative practices, the university has implemented a review procedure for all deans and campus administrators.

In compliance with this policy, Chancellor John Wiley and Provost Peter Spear recently convened a review committee for Law School Dean Kenneth Davis to assess the performance of Dean Davis in the areas of resource management, academic leadership, administrative leadership and external relations.

The committee welcomes written comments and/or requests for an interview, on the leadership and administration of Dean Davis. Written comments and requests for interviews are strongly encouraged prior to Wednesday, Oct. 1, and may be addressed to the staff of the review committee, Noel Radomski, 94 Bascom Hall, Radomski@bascom.wisc.edu, 263-0238. The committee will treat all communications as confidential, and the university will protect such confidentiality within the framework of Wisconsin law.

Members of the committee are Melvin Weinswig (chair), Ralph Cagle, Walter Dickey and June Weisberger.

Free bus passes
Transportation Services is offering bus passes to university employees again, enabling them to ride free on all Madison Metro Routes, excluding special event shuttles. To receive a pass, bring a valid UW ID card to one of these locations:

  • Transportation Services, 124 WARF, Monday-Friday, 7:15 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
  • Transportation Information Place, Memorial Union, Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1-4 p.m.
  • UW Hospital and Clinics employees can pick up their passes in the Clinical Sciences Center office, G5/140.

Family Caregivers Sought for Research Study
The Center for Health Systems Research and Analysis is conducting a research study of family caregiver needs during the course of cancer illness. This will inform development of a non-commercial university-based computer information and support system for family caregivers of people with advanced cancer. Adults (18 years or older) who are or were the main person regularly assisting in the care and support of a loved one with cancer can participate. The study involves completion of a one-time mailed survey that takes less than an hour to fill out. The study is not believed to involve any risks. All information provided will be kept private. A reimbursement of $20 is available for filling out the survey.
