Alumni to experience today’s UW at Day on Campus

April 19, 2002 By Cheryl Porior-Mayhew

Hundreds of UW–Madison alumni will return Friday, May 10, for Day on Campus, the annual educational event hosted by the Wisconsin Alumni Association.

This one-day event at the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St., provides alumni with an opportunity to experience today’s UW–Madison – without the exams and papers.

Attendees can choose from six, one-hour sessions taught by UW–Madison faculty and staff on topics ranging from the history of women’s health, to the university’s role in Wisconsin’s economy, to insights into American icon Thomas Jefferson. All participants are invited to attend a luncheon in the Memorial Union’s Great Hall, followed by Todd Welbourne’s performance of 20th-century compositions. Optional tours of the Elvehjem Museum of Art and Rennebohm Hall, which houses the new School of Pharmacy, are scheduled for the afternoon.

“Day on Campus gives alumni the chance to live the life of a student again,” says Paula Bonner, president and CEO of WAA. “Many participants are back to celebrate milestone reunions as part of Alumni Weekend, so they’re already surrounded by former classmates. Day on Campus kicks the weekend off by introducing them to the expert faculty who continue to make today’s UW–Madison a renowned institution.”

Faculty lectures will include: “Women’s Health: Past, Present and Future” by Molly Carnes, Department of Medicine professor and director of the UW Center for Women’s Health and Women’s Health Research; “Thomas Jefferson: Insights into an American Icon” by John Kaminski, Department of History professor, and founder and director of the Center for the Study of the American Constitution; “The Facts You Need: Becoming an Informed Medication Consumer” by Jeanine Mount, School of Pharmacy associate professor; “Making UW–Madison a Value-Added Partner in the Wisconsin Economy” by Mark Bugher, director of the University Research Park; “SALT: UW’s Eyes on the Southern Skies” by Eric Wilcots, Department of Astronomy associate professor; and “Protecting Wisconsin’s Land” by Daniel Bromley, Anderson-Bascom Professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

The cost of Day on Campus is $30 per person and includes all lectures, lunch and campus tours. You do not have to be a UW–Madison graduate or celebrating a milestone class reunion to attend. For information on Day on Campus, contact Sue Miller, (608) 262-9647.
