Memorial Union closed June 16
Due to meetings associated with the U.S. Conference of Mayors 2002 being held in Madison, Memorial Union will be closed to the public Sunday, June 16. Wisconsin Union Director Mark Guthier says that because of security needs for a group of hundreds of elected officials, Wisconsin Union leaders felt it best to limit access to the building. The entire building will be closed for the day.

Labs named for trustees
In honor of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation and two of its trustees, the Biochemistry Department has dedicated the Russell G. Cleary and Walter A. Frautschi Laboratories. The labs are on the fifth floor of the Biochemistry Addition. Walter A. Frautschi of Webcrafters Inc. served as a trustee from 1947-88; Russell G. Cleary, former president of Heileman Brewing Co., served as a trustee from 1985-97. Both men are deceased.

Budget action detected
State budget conference committee members continue to meet to resolve differences between the Senate and Assembly versions of the budget adjustment bill. One provision would set aside $901,600 and six positions at the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for testing wild deer for chronic wasting disease. Funding would be used for staff-related costs, testing equipment, supplies and incineration. Program revenues would be provided from the Department of Natural Resources. The Assembly and Senate will meet in special session today, May 15, to take up the chronic wasting disease issue.

Niederhuber moves on
John E. Niederhuber has announced his resignation as director of the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center effective Oct. 31. Niederhuber has held the job since 1997. “This has been a difficult decision,” Niederhuber says. “However, I believe that I have accomplished what I was brought here to do, and the time has come for me to explore other options in my field.” A national recruitment effort to replace Niederhuber will start in fall.
