Athletics gets certified
UW–Madison and 11 other Division I member institutions were certified Feb. 21 by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The purpose of athletics certification is to ensure integrity in the institution’s athletics program and to assist institutions in improving their athletics departments. Legislation mandating athletics certification was adopted in 1993. The certification process includes a review of governance and commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, fiscal integrity and commitment to equity.

Call forwarding changes
Beginning Monday, March 4, the process will change for forwarding calls to local telephone numbers outside the Centrex system. Users must enter *116, then *9, then the number when using Call Forward Variable with non-Centrex numbers. (The code used to forward calls to Centrex or long distance numbers is unchanged.) Call Forward Variable (*116) enables you to forward calls to a telephone number within or outside of the Centrex system.

Committee to vote on budget
The Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee is scheduled to begin voting on items in the governor’s budget reform bill (SS AB 1) today, Feb. 27, continuing through Thursday, March 7. The committee has held public hearings on the measure, and UW System Regent Fred Mohs testified for information only about the proposed cuts to the UW System budget. Nelson naming advances
The Senate Universities Committee has endorsed SB 415, which renames the Institute for Environmental Studies in honor of Gaylord Nelson. The bill now goes to the full Senate.

Carbone dies
Paul P. Carbone, former director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, died unexpectedly Feb. 22 in Singapore of an apparent heart attack. He was 70.
Carbone had been in Singapore, where he had been developing a comprehensive cancer program, since December. Funeral arrangements are pending. Born May 2, 1931, in White Plains, N.Y., Carbone came to UW–Madison in 1976. Since his retirement, Carbone helped lead the HealthStar campaign to raise funds for medical facilities.

Bunce dies at 65
William C. Bunce, former director of the Kohler Art Library who worked for the university for four decades, died Feb. 23. He was 65. Bunce headed the Kohler Art Library from 1966 until his retirement in 1999. He designed the complete layout of the library and expanded the book collection to a nationally recognized resource of 100,000 volumes.
Bunce’s lecture “Sandboxes,” an Artists’ Books program scheduled Thursday, Feb. 28, for the Friends of the Libraries, has been canceled. A memorial service will be held in spring on campus.

Backward glance
From Wisconsin Week, Feb. 19, 1992: Collective bargaining for faculty and staff is back on the front burner, with three supporting bills introduced in the Legislature. … The UW Foundation has raised two-thirds of its $400 million capital campaign goal. … Faculty pay plan funding is inadequate to meet market pressures, Provost David Ward says. … The UW System will hold open 127 jobs to cope with funding reallocations needed as a result of state funding cutbacks.
