Below are two questions Ask Bucky recently answered.

Q: What is the history of the Motion “W” as a UW–Madison sports symbol?

A: Shortly after Barry Alvarez, former head football coach and current athletic director, arrived in Madison, he felt it was important to seek out a fresh look for the logo on the football helmets to usher in a new era for Badger sports. In 1990, Alvarez considered multiple designs before selecting the Motion “W,” a logo designed by Rayovac artist Rick Suchanek. At the time, the logo came complete with a tail projecting from the back, but Alvarez thought the tail was a bit over the top and had it removed. The Motion “W” logo subsequently became associated with all Badger sports after UW–Madison purchased rights to the design. Q: What is the percentage of students who live on campus or in the surrounding area? Is UW–Madison considered a commuter school?

A: UW–Madison is not considered a commuter school. Even though there are no statistics regarding the actual number of commuting students, University Housing confirmed that in the coming year, more than 7,000 of the more than 40,000 students who attend UW–Madison will reside in university residence halls, and thousands more will live in surrounding campus area housing.
