Ask Bucky

Do you have questions? We have answers! Ask Bucky is a service provided by the Campus Information and Visitor Center, your one-stop shop for information about the UW–Madison campus and community and your centralized source for off-campus housing listings. For more information, call 263-2400, visit the office in the Red Gym or the new satellite location in Bascom Hall, or visit us at http://www.civc.wisc.edu. Below are two questions Ask Bucky recently answered.

Q: My husband and I both graduated from the UW, and we recall a housing exchange program that we have been trying to locate without much luck. We are in the process of building a home and we would like to “house-sit” for someone that may be out of town on sabbatical, etc. Could you help me locate this service/program?

A: Several years ago, the Office of the Secretary of the Faculty, which had previously maintained a list of faculty housing vacancies, began referring all faculty interested in looking for or listing housing vacancies to UW–Madison’s off-campus housing office. Today, that office, now called the Campus Area Housing Listing Service (http://www.housing.civc.wisc.edu) provides a searchable online database of hundreds of rentals available in and around Madison, including empty apartments and houses, roommate situations, privately owned residence halls, co-ops and rooms in private homes or boarding houses. Listings are free to search and a nominal fee is assessed to list. There are a variety of search parameters, including unit type, number of bedrooms, rent, location and availability of parking. Listings of faculty members’ homes are noted as such. For questions, call 263-2400.

Q: I have noticed that the flags around campus are at times flying at half-staff, but I am never sure why. Who should I contact to find out?

A: To find out when and why flags on campus are flying at half-staff, contact the University Police Department at 262-2957.
