Action steps for faculty and instructors to bring conversations about hate and bias into the classroom

April 14, 2016
  • Address hate and bias incidents in your curriculum to ameliorate unacceptable occurrences in our campus community. For example, tie fall curricula or class participation to the Annual Fall Diversity Forum.
  • Look at “bullying” language as a way to address possible hate/bias incidents in the classroom.
  • Commit to engaging in ongoing cultural competency training. Learning Communities for Institutional Change and Excellence (LCICE) provides these services campuswide.
  • Commit to experiencing the Leadership Institute through UW Libraries and become a facilitator, carving out 10-15% of your time towards these efforts
  • Support the request for additional staff to help improve campus climate and our students’ ability to be successful.
  • Regularly visit the Campus Climate website and also report incidents of hate or bias there.
