Spring brings campus construction

April 5, 2006

New construction projects are beginning on campus that will affect traffic.

  • Highland Avenue between the UW Hospital emergency room entrance (near the Highland-University Bay Drive intersection) and the Waisman Center will be under construction for approximately nine weeks, weather permitting. The project began last week.

Two-way traffic will be maintained in the construction zone, but it may be slow and delayed at times. Motorists are asked to use alternate routes whenever possible.

  • Demolition of the former bank building at the corner of North Park Street and University Avenue is expected to be under way soon. It will make way for the addition to Grainger Hall.

A covered pedestrian walkway will be installed around the site, and the bus stop on Park Street will be relocated nearby temporarily. The bike lanes will remain open.

Demolition will begin on the interior. There may be times when single traffic lanes are barricaded so that trucks can haul debris away, but those instances will be kept to a minimum. Flag persons will be on hand to ensure that traffic continues to move around the site.
