Committee seeks Medical School dean
A search-and-screen committee is looking for a successor to Philip Farrell, who will step down from the position of dean of the Medical School in December. The 22-member committee will seek nominations, recruit applicants, select finalists and submit those names to Chancellor John Wiley for consideration.

Applications and nominations for the deanship must be received by Friday, June 17, to ensure consideration. CNCS Annual Meeting

Anxiety study seeks participants
John Marshall, professor of psychiatry, is recruiting volunteers with generalized anxiety disorder to participate in a 59-week research study testing a drug for people who have some of the following symptoms: excessive worry, feeling restless or keyed up, difficulty concentrating, problems sleeping and worrying that may interfere with functioning.

Online short courses offered

Catalog of noncredit courses available
The Summer Catalog of Continuing Education Courses describes hundreds of courses in the visual arts, dance, music, fitness, acting, writing, mental health and international language fields. Weight management program offered
The UW Sports Medicine Center is offering a 13-week weight management program for people who are 70 or more pounds overweight. Registration begins Monday, May 16, and includes a $390 fee, with possible HMO reimbursement. For more information or to register, call 263-7936.

Swim classes offered
UW Sports Medicine is offering swimming classes this summer for people at all levels.

The UW Sports Medicine Triathlon Lake Swim class offers group open water swimming in a safe and fun environment. Classes are supervised by a trained lifeguard and a highly experienced triathletes instructor, who offer stroke improvement tips during each session. The class meets at various areas throughout Madison 5:45-6:45 p.m. Wednesdays, June 22-July 27. Cost for the class is $60 with some discounts available.

Masters Swim classes are taught by experienced competitive swimming instructors and are designed for intermediate to advanced swimmers. Each section promises a challenging workout as well as some stroke mechanic work. The Monday/Wednesday section meets 7:35-8:50 p.m., Tuesday/Thursday sections meet 6-7:15 a.m. and 6:40-7:55 p.m., and the Friday section meets 6-7:15 a.m. The classes meet at the UW Sports Medicine facility, 621 Science Drive, from June to August and have variable fees.

The Begin to Swim class is aimed at new adult swimmers for developing basic skills. The class meets at the UW Sports Medicine facility, 621 Science Drive, 12:45-1:45 p.m. Fridays June 17-Aug. 26. Cost for the class is $88 with some discounts available.

Writing workshops offered
Write-by-the-Lake Writer’s Retreat, a weeklong program by the Division of Continuing Studies offering writing workshops and critiques, will take place Monday-Friday, June 20-24 at the Pyle Center.
