Consider leading a FIG

November 19, 2002

Faculty members seeking ways to improve the transcultural skills of undergraduates and make a difference in retention should consider leading a First-Year Interest Group next year.

FIGs are groups of 20 first-semester freshmen who take the same three courses, including a small anchor course that supports integration of learning. Most FIGs involve an ethnic studies course, either as the synthesizing course or as a collateral course. FIGs have a good record for retaining students, including students of color.
