Pat Schroeder to speak at Union

Former Congresswoman Pat Schroeder will speak about”Challenges in America’s Future” Tuesday, Feb. 15, in the Wisconsin Union Theater at 7:30 p.m.

The lecture is free; tickets became available to students, faculty and staff and Wisconsin Union members Feb. 9 at the Union Theater Box Office; remaining tickets will be available to the public starting Friday, Feb. 10.

First elected to Congress in 1972, Pat Schroeder represented the first congressional district of Colorado, including the city and county of Denver, in the U.S. House of Representatives until 1997, when she retired as the longest-serving woman in the House. A leading Democratic voice on many issues ranging from constitutional rights to policies affecting women, children and families, Schroeder served on numerous committees including the National Security Committee, House Judiciary Committee and chaired the Select Committee on Children, Youth and Families. Currently, she is president of the Association of American Publishers.

Schroeder’s visit is sponsored by University Bookstore, Associated Students of Madison, Students for Bill Bradley, the Women’s History Society, the Young Feminist Task Force and the Distinguished Lecture Series Committee of the Wisconsin Union Directorate, the student program board that develops, promotes and coordinates more than 800 activities and events annually.

Upcoming Distinguished Lecture Series speakers includes Sherman Alexie, Native American filmmaker of “Smoke Signals,” March 2, and noted historian Howard Zinn, April 18.
