Siblings Nate, 11, Ben, 6, and Caroline Hughes, 9, lend their hands-on help during Project Freshman 15,000, a student-led effort to make the world’s largest Rice Krispies Treat on Engineering Mall at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The three-day project, conceived by UW–Madison first-year student Joe Tarnowski, involved working with the donation of 5,500 pounds of Rice Krispies cereal, 9,000 pounds of marshmallows and 850 pounds of butter, and then attempting to cook and mold a 15,000-pound Rice Krispie Treat.
While the finished 11,327-pounds product was short of the goal, the group is still confident they beat the world record, which was set in 2010 with a brick of Rice Krispies weighing 10,314 pounds, according to Guinness World Records. The treat was cut up and sold, with proceeds going to local charities.
