Dalai Lama’s address to be televised

As a public service, the Television Wisconsin Network (TVW) and Wisconsin Public Television will broadcast the Dalai Lama’s speech from the Kohl Center Wednesday evening, May 13.

TVW, formerly WISC2, will broadcast the event beginning at 6 p.m. with a half-hour special, followed by the speech at 6:30 p.m. Wisconsin Public Television will air the address on a delayed basis at 10:30 p.m. that evening and again at 9 p.m. on Friday, May 15.

“The community response to the Dalai Lama’s appearance has been overwhelming. We are very grateful to these stations for working with us, arranging the broadcasts and extending the reach of what will truly be an educational and memorable event,” said Henry Lufler, executive assistant to the chancellor.

1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet, will speak on “The Buddhist Sense of Love and Compassion.” Tickets for the address were such a hot item on campus that they were gone before they were scheduled to be made available to the general public on April 13. By April 6, more than 12,350 tickets had been distributed, with a maximum of four per university ID.

TVW reaches more than 118,000 households in Dane County. It is available on TCI Cable channel 6, CTI Cable channel 39, SKY Cable channel 51, and various Marcus Cable channels, depending on the community in which the viewer lives.

Viewers will be able to see Wisconsin Public Television’s delayed broadcasts throughout most of the state.
