UWPD: Timely Warning information on Sept. 20 incidents
UWPD distributed the following message to the campus community on Sept. 20:
You are receiving this Timely Warning message as part of UW–Madison’s commitment to providing campus-area crime information in compliance with the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or, Clery Act, as it is commonly known.
On Friday, September 20 at approximately 1:45 a.m., an 18-year-old female was walking along Lathrop Street, near Chadborne Avenue, when she was approached by a man who pointed a handgun at her and demanded her belongings. The suspect fled with the victim’s purse and phone – the victim was not injured. The suspect is described as a male, black, 20’s, thin build, approximately 5’8”, last seen wearing a dark sweatshirt.
The City of Madison Police Department is actively investigating this case. If anyone has any information about the crime listed above, or are witnesses to other crimes on campus, please call the UW–Madison Police Department at 608-264-COPS.
Students are reminded, as a general safety rule, to be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially at night. Never resist giving up your property when you’re confronted by an individual with a weapon. In addition, don’t walk alone or in small groups when traveling through less populated areas.
In addition to the above incident, the Madison Police Department took a man into custody Thursday evening, after he approached two UW students outside Grainger Hall and displayed a knife. The suspect was located and booked into the Dane County Jail.
