Two faculty win Sloan fellowships

March 10, 2010

Two faculty members were among 118 young faculty who were awarded Sloan Research Fellowships.

The grants, by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, are awarded annually, on a competitive basis, to support research for two years.

Li Zhang, assistant professor of computer science, is a specialist in construction and analysis of computer vision, graphics and animation. He has studied how to stabilize images, and how to construct images taken from several viewpoints.

Douglas Weibel, assistant professor of biochemistry, studies the biochemistry of microbes, with an emphasis on understanding the molecular mechanisms that explain the structure and function of bacteria. Based on a fusion of techniques from biology, physics, engineering and chemistry, the work may be applied to creating new materials from bacterial cells.
