Celebrate Greenbush Day on March 23

March 10, 2010

Current and former residents of Madison’s historic Greenbush neighborhood and their neighbors in the university community will be gathering for the fourth annual Greenbush Day celebration on Tuesday, March 23.

It will take place from 3:30–6 p.m. at the university’s Welcome Center, 21 N. Park St. Free parking will be available on the second level of the Lot 29 ramp, which is accessible from Park Street. The public is welcome to attend.

This year’s theme is “Growing Up in the Bush.” There will be musical entertainment, reminiscent storytelling, exhibits, complimentary light refreshments and ethnic foods.

The event will feature “Images of the Greenbush: Photos, Art and Poetry” presented by Wenda Mincberg’s fourth-grade class from Randall School.

“Community Builder” awards will be presented in recognition of work with the nearby Triangle program to community gardens and farmers’ market efforts.

Known as the melting pot of Madison, the Greenbush neighborhood has long been a place where many races and cultures have settled and formed a community. It is also the location of urban renewal projects in the 1960s. As “next door” neighbors, the university and the community are exploring new relationships and activities, including helping to promote historical preservation, resource development and student involvement.
