Moral lessons from nature films lead off fall Roundtable lectures

October 2, 2009

The moral lessons of nature films, the warrior tradition of native Americans and the beautiful art songs of graduate voice students will be featured during a series of University Roundtable luncheon presentations beginning on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Featured speakers at University Roundtable discuss their work at the university as part of a series of engaging talks on timely, interesting topics.

The fall-semester programs, which feature a buffet lunch that begins serving at 11:30 a.m. at the Memorial Union, include:

  • Oct. 14: Gregg Mitman, a professor of history of science and history of medicine, will discuss “From Marching Penguins to Charging Buffalo: The Moral Tales of Nature Films.” Mitman is interim director of the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and the driving force behind “Tales From Planet Earth,’’ the free environmental film festival coming Nov. 6–8.
  • Nov. 11: Patty Loew, associate professor of life sciences communications, will present bits from her award-winning documentary “The Way of the Warrior” for the Nov. 11 program, which also marks Veterans Day. Loew is a producer at Wisconsin Public Television, where she hosts “In Wisconsin,” and is a member of the Bad River band of Lake Superior Ojibwe.
  • Dec. 15: Doctoral students in voice in the School of Music will present seasonal selections of art music titled “Songs for the Solstice” for the Dec. 16 program. This event will be held in Great Hall of Memorial Union.

The programs — in Tripp Commons in October and November and in Great Hall in December — are open to members of the university community and their guests, and each luncheon costs $10. The three-luncheon series price is $28, if paid by Oct 8.

The reservation deadline is one week prior to each event, and reservations can be made online at http://www.ohrd.wisc.edu.

Reservations can also be made through Donna Silver at 263-2985 or dlsilver@wisc.edu Checks made out to UW Roundtable can be sent to Silver at 270 Bascom Hall.
