Message to campus community regarding swine flu

April 27, 2009

Members of the UW–Madison Community,

UW-Madison officials are actively monitoring reports of swine flu affecting Mexico, with additional cases around the United States.

At this time, there are no cases in Wisconsin and no immediate impact on the university, its community or operations. As in all situations of this
nature, the university works closely in conjunction with local and state health officials to receive information and react to a developing situation.

Officials from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and University Health Services (UHS) advise that people who have traveled to areas where this outbreak is occurring should be alert for symptoms of fever over 100 degrees, cough and body ache.

If those symptoms develop within seven days of travel, contact your health care provider by phone for information or treatment. Students can contact UHS at (608) 265-5600. As always, we encourage the campus community to use common sense and continue simple good health practices like washing your hands and staying home when you are ill.

Public agencies, including UW–Madison, have been actively preparing for the potential of a pandemic for a number of years.  Although swine flu has not been declared a pandemic, there are plans and procedures in place to ensure an effective response, particularly if the situation changes over time.
