Writer’s Choice: Wisconsin Singers, Madhatters in concert

March 26, 2008 By Gwen Evans

Two student groups, the high-energy Wisconsin Singers and the popular men’s a cappella group the MadHatters, are teaming up to present a benefit concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, at the Wisconsin Union Theater.

All show proceeds benefit the American Family Children’s Hospital Foundation. Tickets are $18, $10 for students and seniors.

Each year, more than 50,000 people experience the Singers’ Broadway-style singing, dancing and instrumental enthusiasm. The group’s repertoire includes familiar radio hits, Broadway classics, songs from contemporary musicals and a tribute to one-hit wonders. The band is featured throughout the show, with big band, jazz, pop and rock performances.

The Wisconsin Singers deliver wholesome humor, glitz and showmanship in a professionally packaged revue.

Founded in 1997, the MadHatters gave rise to the now more numerous a cappella groups on campus. The goal of the group is to make good music, give back to the community and have fun along the way. They perform on campus as well as at hospitals, senior homes and schools, and for community events.

Since its beginning years, the group’s fan base has exploded and they quickly earned national notice. A track from their first CD earned a spot on the 2002 “Best of College A Cappella” CD. That publicity helped the MadHatters take their first concert tour to the East Coast, performing at Harvard University and in New York City.

Their second tour took them to the West Coast, with stops in Denver, Las Vegas, San Diego, the beaches of Orange County, Los Angeles, Hollywood, San Luis Obispo and San Francisco.

Last fall, the MadHatters filled the Capitol Theater in the Overture Center on back-to-back nights and released their third album, “Not For Credit.” A track on that CD, “I Believe,” will be included on the 2008 “Best of Collegiate A Cappella.”

Their concerts usually sell out, and the MadHatters have received awards from the UW–Madison Student Organization Office for their hard work, dedication and contributions to the school and community.
