John Berry, Department of Chemistry, is the first winner of the Ernst-Haage Prize in Bioinorganic Chemistry, an award given annually to a doctoral or postdoctoral research associate who has made a major contribution to the area of bioinorganic chemistry.

LaMarr Billups, special assistant to the chancellor for community relations, has received Downtown Madison Inc.’s Community Asset Award.

Gilles Bousquet, dean of International Studies, has been appointed chair of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation’s Senior International Officers group, a consortium of 12 research universities, including the 11 members of the Big Ten Conference and the University of Chicago.

R. Alta Charo, School of Law and Department of Medical History and Bioethics, was elected to the National Academies Institute of Medicine.

Aparna Dharwadker, Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia, has won the Joe A. Callaway Prize for the best book on drama or theater, presented by New York University’s Department of English.

Virginia Sapiro, Department of Political Science, Women’s Studies Program and associate vice chancellor for teaching and learning, was named UW–Madison’s first Outstanding First-Year Advocate.

Joe Thomas, senior offensive tackle for the football team, has been named one of 17 members of the 2006 National Scholar-Athlete Class. Thomas also is now a finalist for the Draddy Trophy, which goes to college football’s top scholar-athlete.
