Reminder: Phone directories offered online only

November 1, 2006

In years past, hard copies of the university’s faculty/staff and student directories would be distributed about now, but times have changed. Starting with this 2006–07 academic year, the directories are available online only.

Unlike the printed version, in which the information quickly became out of date, the online directory will be updated daily with the inclusion of new employees and changes in contact information and departmental listings.

Vice Chancellor Darrell Bazzell notes that other UW System institutions have already stopped printing their directories, and the state of Wisconsin put its directory online more than five years ago.

Laura Ingram, acting director of budget and management services in the Office of Human Resources, offers these tips for using the online directory:

  • Click on the “People” button at http://www.wisc.edu/. In the People search box, names can be entered either by first name, last name (e.g. Sara Jones) or by last name, first name (Jones, Sara). Last name, first name is usually the faster search technique.
  • Multiple matches may be found when you search. It is easy to distinguish between student matches and staff matches. Student names are printed in mixed case and staff names are printed in all capital letters.
  • To view the full entry for any person, click on the words “More Information.” That will take you to the full entry that will display name, title, division/department/unit, office address, phone number and e-mail address. Home addresses will not be displayed in the online directory.

For those who want hard copies, printable online PDF files of the departmental directory listings and the emeriti and faculty indexes are now available at http://www.vc.wisc.edu/app/directory/deptsearch.pl.

The A–Z listing of faculty and staff is expected to be available in a printable PDF file later this month.

The university published directories for more than a century. The 1899–1900 edition, bound in book form, was known as the “Students Manual.” It included faculty, board of regents and course listings, student organizations and advertisements. Later versions were titled “Directory of Officers and Students.” Separate directories for staff and students first appeared in the late 1940s.
