University urges civic action

November 1, 2006

With the Tuesday, Nov.7, general election drawing near, faculty and staff can promote civic engagement by encouraging students to learn about the issues and vote, says interim Dean of Students Lori Berquam.

“I believe that one of the most important jobs of the university is to provide students with the support and resources they need to become active, engaged members of their communities,” she says. “Exercising voting rights is one easy but crucial way for students become civicly engaged.

“Please take a minute during class, or your interactions with students, to remind them of the importance of voting.”

Most students who are U.S. citizens, will be 18 years of age by Election Day, and have been residents of Wisconsin for at least 10 days prior to registering are eligible.

Students may register to vote at their polling places on Election Day with proof of residence or a witness who accompanies them to the polls.

Polls are open from 7 a.m.–8 p.m., and the location of a student’s polling place is determined by his or her current address.

Likewise, faculty and staff members are also reminded to vote.
