University Club now serving breakfast

The University Club is adding breakfast to the menu starting today.

Breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. and continue until 10 a.m. with lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“There really aren’t many places on campus to get breakfast,” says University Club General Manager Justin Duris. “We saw a need.”

The offerings include traditional breakfast fare like eggs and bacon but also a few specialties like carrot cake pancakes and crab cake benedict.

“My favorite is definitely the crab cakes benedict,” says Duris. “That really was fun to come up with.”

A la carte items will also be available. Pastries will be homemade by Executive Chef Charlie Jilek. The University Club is known for featuring local foods and will continue to do so with breakfast.

Duris hopes that people will think of starting off their day at the University Club whether it’s for a morning meeting or just fueling up before the work day. They have four private rooms that can accommodate up to 20 people for meetings.

“My biggest goal is to be a cherished part of campus,” Duris says.

Founded in 1907, the University Club was a response to UW President Charles Van Hise’s call for a faculty club to promote fellowship in the campus community. It opened after founders raised enough money to buy a fire-damaged brick home at the corner of State and Murray streets originally owned by John Sterling, one of the university’s first professors. Now, the University Club welcomes the public.
