Recent Sightings: Transforming the State Street Mall
A city of Madison project to renovate the 700-800 blocks of the State Street Mall, where it meets campus, has begun with crews demolishing the old mall. Officials expect that the construction project will be completed this fall.
The newly renovated mall area will include a refreshed design featuring trees and landscaping, new seating areas and a raised pedestrian crosswalk at North Park Street leading to Bascom Hill.
The concrete speaker’s platform temporarily remains standing as workers use heavy construction equipment to begin demolition of the tired-looking streetscape. In the background is University Club, left, and the Mosse Humanities Building.
Pedestrian detours and the sounds of jackhammers and construction equipment will be replaced by a bustling campus-area pedestrian thoroughfare. This is a rendering of how the project will look once it is completed.
