Graduate programs ranked highly by U.S. News and World Report

Numerous UW–Madison graduate programs are ranked among the nation’s best in the 2015 edition of U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Graduate Schools.”

“UW-Madison offers a wide variety of subjects for our graduate students to study,” says Provost Paul M. DeLuca Jr. “We’re proud that so many of these graduate programs have once again ranked so highly.”

Not all programs are ranked every year. Those UW–Madison programs ranked this year include:

  • Biological sciences: 18th overall. Ranked specialties include microbiology (fourth). 
  • School of Business: 27th overall for full-time MBA, and tied for 24th overall for the part-time MBA program.
  • Chemistry: Ninth overall. Ranked specialties include analytical (sixth), biochemistry (tied for second), inorganic (sixth) and organic (eighth).
  • Computer science: Tied for 11th. Ranked specialties include programming language (10th) and systems (tied for eighth).
  • Earth sciences: Tied for 13th. Ranked specialties include geochemistry (tied for fifth).
  • School of Education: Fifth overall. Ranked specialties include administration and supervision (second), counseling and personnel services (tied for third), curriculum and instruction (first), education policy (tied for third), educational psychology (second), elementary education (second), secondary education (third) and special education (tied for seventh).
  • College of Engineering: 17th overall. Ranked specialties include chemical engineering (eighth), industrial and manufacturing engineering (10th), and nuclear engineering (tied for third). The College of Engineering was also ranked third in Best Online Options.
  • Law School: Tied for 31st.
  • Mathematics: Tied for 14th. Ranked specialties include logic (tied for fourth).
  • Physics: Tied for 18th. Ranked specialties include plasma (tied for third).
  • School of Medicine and Public Health: 28th in research and tied for ninth in primary care. Ranked specialties include family medicine (seventh).
  • Statistics: Tied for 12th.
