Chancellor announces Academic Staff Excellence Awards

Chancellor Biddy Martin announces the 19th year of the UW–Madison Academic Staff Excellence Awards. This year nine extraordinary people will be honored for achievement in seven categories. In addition, UW System will honor academic staff in four categories. Recipients of the UW–Madison Academic Staff Excellence Awards will be named in March and honored both at the May Academic Staff Assembly meeting and at a reception hosted by Chancellor Martin in late spring. Martin urges everyone to participate in these programs by forwarding nominations for those academic staff who exemplify the sustained excellence, outstanding achievement and creative initiative that characterizes this world-renowned university.

Nomination guidelines and cover pages for all awards can be found online. Nomination packets for all awards (including UW System and Regents awards) should be sent to Donna Silver, Office of the Secretary of the Academic Staff, 270 Bascom Hall, 500 Lincoln Drive. Adult student scholarships

Madison-area adult students who are currently enrolled at or were recently admitted to UW–Madison can apply for several scholarships that have been supported by generous donors. While the eligibility criteria vary, there are two main categories of scholarship awards administered by the Adult and Student Services Center (ASSC) in the Division of Continuing Studies. The two categories are: returning adult students, people who have had a significant interruption in study, or have specific age and gender stipulations; and single-parent students.

Call for pre-proposals for the Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment

The provost’s office is soliciting proposals from faculty, staff, and students for the spring 2010 Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment competition. This endowment helps foster the Wisconsin Idea.

Proposals are encouraged for new outreach and public engagement activities that partner with community and off-campus organizations to extend and apply our research, education and clinical knowledge to help solve problems or take advantage of opportunities. Projects may begin on or after July 1, 2010, and last up to three years. Proposals for initiatives up to $120,000 are encouraged. This year, the endowment will grant up to $750,000 through the competition.

The Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment call for proposals involves two steps: UW–Madison faculty, staff or students must first submit a pre-proposal; and individuals whose pre-proposals are accepted will be invited to submit a full proposal. Pre- and full proposals must be signed off at the departmental and dean’s/director’s levels before submission to the Office of the Provost. Pre-proposals are due in deans’ offices by noon, Wednesday, Feb. 3. Signed copies of the pre-proposals are due in the provost’s office, Room 117 Bascom Hall, by noon, on Wednesday, Feb. 10. Pre-proposal finalists will be announced by Wednesday, March 17.
