Specimens of this new species of water flea, "Dumontia oregonensis,"
sat on a shelf in the laboratory of Stanley Dodson, a University of Wisconsin-Madison
professor of zoology, for five years before they were dissected and identified
as a new species representing a family of unknown water fleas. Dodson and former
graduate student Carlos J. Santos-Flores, described the new animal in the scientific
journal Hydrobiologia.
