Caption: UW-Madison Civil and Environmental Engineering Assistant Professor Katherine (Trina) McMahon, a researcher who studies both wastewater engineering processes and bacteria in lakes, stands ankle-deep in the still-chilly water of Lake Mendota in April 2007. McMahon will draw on her research interests in both wastewater and freshwater to provide a unique perspective on how bacteria contribute to phosphorus cycling in eutrophied lakes, which often have severe water quality challenges such as algae blooms.

Caption: This image of the Madison lakes was created using a variety of digital image processing techniques to enhance three separate Landsat-7 images from three different dates (October 15, 1999; October 31, 1999; and April 24, 2000) combined into a single composite image. The results provide a dramatic view of an algal bloom that occurred on Lake Mendota and Lake Monona in late October, 1999.
