Claudia Hirsch, left, lab animal supervisor for the School of Veterinary
Medicine, calms a horse named Carmel while senior instructional specialist
Cheryl Deering draws a blood sample. The horses in the medical teaching
herd at the Charmany Instructional Facility are sometimes used as blood
donors for horses brought into the Vet Med Large Animal Clinic. "Carmel
is my favorite," says Hirsch. "I take her home whenever I can," as
part of Charmany's take-a-horse-home summer program. Hirsch is a recipient
of a 2005 Classified Employee Recognition Award, in part for her yeoman
service renovating the Charmany facility after it was damaged during a
tornado in June 2004.
