Caption: Steve Carpenter, professor of zoology in the UW-Madison
Center for Limnology, studies the impact of phosphorous on eutrophication in
Lake Mendota and other Wisconsin lakes. Eutrophication occurs when nutrient-rich
soil washes into lakes and streams. Nutrients, such as those in phosphorus-rich
fertilizers, stimulate the growth of algae and transform many of the world's
lakes from clear freshwater reservoirs to soupy, weed-choked pools.
