TO: Editors, news directors, Rose Bowl feature reporters FROM: Liz Beyler, (608) 262-8287 RE: More Rose Bowl personalities For your Rose Bowl feature coverage, here are several possible story subjects who are remember the Badgers' past days of glory: George Simkowski, a Wisconsin alumnus who lives in Chicago, today places brand-name products in movies and TV shows through his company, Prime Time Marketing. But back in 1953, he played on the first Wisconsin team to go to the Rose Bowl, and he's got some great stories to tell and some little-known facts about the game. The Badgers lost, 7-0, to the University of Southern California that year. Simkowski recalls that USC's starting quarterback suffered a broken leg in the game, and his inexperienced replacement went on to throw the winning touchdown pass. Simkowski, a starting center who played the whole game, can talk about his role in the accident. Simkowski says the '53 game holds the record for the largest Rose Bowl attendance -- over 101,000. He has attended all of the Badgers' Rose Bowl games since -- 1960, '63, '94, and he'll be in the stands Jan. 1, 1999. George says he loves to go to the Rose Bowls, see his teammates and reminisce. You can reach him at (707) 456-5900. Jim Mott, who worked in the Athletic Department's sports information office from 1959 until his retirement in 1990, is looking forward to returning to the Rose Bowl this year, courtesy of his sons. He didn't make the trip five years ago, but he traveled with the team to Pasadena in 1960, when the Badgers lost to Washington, 44-8, and again in 1963, when they were defeated by Southern California, 42-37. Mott says he hopes this Rose Bowl appearance will be as great as it was in 1994, "when 70 percent of the stadium was red." He recollects that in '60 and '63, the percentage of Badger fans cheering on the team in Pasadena wasn't nearly as large. If you'd like to discuss more of Mott's recollections, he can be reached at (608) 233-5009. Gerald Kulcinski, a UW-Madison engineering professor, was a Badger linebacker and guard on the 1960 Rose Bowl team. He can talk about that experience and what it has meant to him in his life and career. Kulcinski served as a member of the UW Athletic Board from 1988-92. He can be reached at (608) 263-2308. |
