1 To help you make the most of your reporting team's trip to Pasadena, this daybook provides a quick summary of some of the events and activities that may be worth covering during the week preceding the Rose Bowl. All times listed, unless otherwise noted, are Pacific time; add two hours for local time. TIMES AND DETAILS ARE STILL SUBJECT TO CHANGE. This schedule will be updated as we learn of more activities that may be of interest to you. Contact numbers are listed for most items. If you need more help, call the Office of News and Public Affairs, (608) 262-3571. Where to find the fans -- Fans are booked at hotels throughout the area. Wisconsin Alumni Association tour participants are staying at the Westin Bonaventure, Century Plaza, Intercontinental, Regent Beverly Wilshire and the Doubletree Santa Monica; the team is staying at the Beverly Hilton; the UW Marching Band is booked at the Doubletree Santa Monica. - - Most press and the official party are staying at the Century Plaza, 2025 Avenue of the Stars, Los Angeles. Where to find help -- ONPA staff members Liz Beyler, Renee Celley and Amy Toburen will staff a media room in the at the Century Plaza. It will be located in the Senator's Board Room, on the mezzanine level. Telephone and pager numbers will be provided as soon as they are arranged. -- Rose Bowl Game media staff will operate a press room in the Bel Air Room of Century Plaza beginning Dec. 26. The team's charter flight departs at 4 p.m. CST and arrives at Los Angeles International Airport at 6 p.m. PST. CONTACT: Steve Malchow, information director, (608) 262-1811. Monday, Dec. 28 BAND DEPARTS: UW Marching Band members leave from the Humanities Building at 4 a.m. for Dane County Regional Airport. Their Omni Air flight takes off at 5:30 a.m. CST and is scheduled to arrive at LAX at 7:30 a.m. FANS DEPART: Charter flights leave Dane County Regional Airport and Mitchell International Airport throughout the day, beginning at 6:45 a.m. CST. TEAM TRIP: Coach Barry Alvarez and several players will be available to media when the team takes a trip to Universal Studios, 100 Universal City Plaza. Please make coverage arrangements in advance. CONTACT: Eliot Sekular, (818) 626-6896. BAND'S FIRST PERFORMANCE: UW Marching Band members peform at the Knotts Berry Farm theme park. 3 p.m., Calico Square. Tuesday, Dec. 29 TOURIST DAY: Fans on Wisconsin Alumni Association group tours may take optional sightseeing trips to places like Universal Studios, Disneyland, Hollywood, and Rose Bowl parade float construction. Times vary. CONTACT: Sheri Hicks, WAA travel director, (608) 262-9521. BAND GOES TO DISNEYLAND: The UW Marching Band has TENTATIVELY scheduled a performance at Disneyland. 1 p.m., train station. TEAMS VISIT HOSPITAL: Members of the UW and UCLA teams visit the children's ward of City of Hope National Medical Center, 1500 E. Duarte. 2:30-4 p.m. WELCOME PARTIES: If you're looking for freshly arrived fans, welcome parties are scheduled at all WAA tour hotels. 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30 BANDS PERFORM: The UW and UCLA marching bands perform for CBS television cameras in the "Coming Up Roses Showcase." 10 a.m., Jackie Robinson Stadium. ADMISSIONS RECEPTION: Prospective students and their parents are invited to a reception hosted by the Office of Admissions. As this is an invitation-only event, please make advance arrangements for coverage. Century Plaza, West Side Room, 5:30 p.m. PEP RALLY: Badger fans rally with the team, Gov. Tommy Thompson, Chancellor David Ward, Athletic Director Pat Richter and the UW Marching Band. ABC Entertainment Center across from the Century Plaza Hotel. 3:30-4:30 p.m. BADGER BASHES: As many as 1,500 fans are expected to meet and mingle at McCormick & Schmick's, 206 N. Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, starting at 4 p.m. Reservations needed: (213) 344-0959. Cost: $20. More convenient to media may be a similar "Badger Pride Party" planned at the Century Club, across the street from Century Plaza, starting at 5 p.m. UW BAND CONCERT: The UW Marching Band performs at Santa Monica Pier. March to the pier, 7 p.m. Performance, 7:15-8:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31 HUDDLE WITH THE FACULTY: Join Larry Meiller of agricultural journalism for a morning lecture. 8:30 a.m., Century Plaza. ROSE BOWL KICKOFF LUNCH: WAA tour fans meet under the tent in parking area I. UW Marching Band members perform. 11:30 a.m., Jackie Robinson Stadium. PARENTS/PLAYERS RECEPTION: Invitation-only event for Tournament of Roses players and parents. 12:30 p.m.-2 p.m., Jackie Robinson Stadium. UW BAND PERFORMS: At the Queen Mary, Long Beach, 2:30 p.m.; and at the Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach, 3:30 p.m. NEW YEAR'S EVE: WAA sponsors dinner parties for tour participants. Century Plaza's Los Angeles Ballroom and Westin Bonaventure California Ballroom, starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 1 TOURNAMENT OF ROSES PARADE: 8-10 a.m. Departures of WAA tour participants from their hotels start at 6 a.m. UW Band departs at 4:30 a.m. to prepare for parade march. BADGER HUDDLE: Pre-game celebration. Chancellor David Ward speaks around noon. 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Jackie Robinson Stadium. BAND PLANS: After the parade the UW Marching Band plans a pre-game performance at the stadium, 1:30 p.m.; a half-time performance; and a "Fifth Quarter" celebration. ROSE BOWL: Kickoff is 2 p.m. A media shuttle will run between the Century Plaza and the stadium during the day and after the game. You must sign up for the shuttle at the Rose Bowl media room. Saturday, Jan. 2 BAND RETURNS: The UW Marching Band is scheduled to
arrive at Dane County Regional Airport at 4 a.m. CST. |
