ARTS AND EVENTS FORECAST: END OF SPRING SEMESTER

MADISON - The semester comes to a close with end-of-the-year events, including spring concerts by Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra ensembles and the Spring Fashion Show, presented by the Textile and Apparel Students Association. These are just some of the campus highlights occurring now through May 18, the end of the spring semester.

ELEGIES FOR ANGELS, PUNKS AND RAGING QUEENS

WHEN AND WHERE: Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10 (7:30 p.m.) and Sunday, May 11 (1 p.m.), Play Circle Theater, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: This musical production features music by Janet Hood and lyrics and additional text by Bill Russell. The work features songs and monologues inspired by the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. Project 40/40 member Andrew Rusch directs this adaptation of the musical, featuring a cast of talented student actors. University Health Services also is offering free HIV testing at the show.

WYSO BOLZ SPRING CONCERTS

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, May 10, 1:15 and 4 p.m., Mills Hall, Mosse Humanities Building, 455 N. Park St.

DETAILS: The spring concerts represent the musical growth of the academic year. Sinfonietta is an intermediate string orchestra, Concert Orchestra is an intermediate full orchestra, and Philharmonia Orchestra is an advanced full orchestra. The Philharmonia Concert will feature Tony Oliva, winner of the 2008 Concerto Competition. 1:30 p.m.: Harp Ensemble, Sinfonietta and Concert Orchestra; 4 p.m.: Percussion Ensemble and Philharmonia Orchestra.

CINEMATHEQUE SPECIAL EVENT: IFVC SHOW

WHEN AND WHERE: Saturday, May 10, 7:30 p.m., 4070 Vilas Hall, 821 University Ave.

DETAILS: Highlighting works produced in communication arts film and video production courses at UW-Madison, this 90-minute program is curated by the instructors of these courses and gives new filmmakers the opportunity to present their films on screen for the first time.

ARBORETUM EVENTS: BIRDING BEFORE BRUNCH, BADGER TROLLEY TOURS, FAMILY WALK

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, May 11: 8-10 a.m. (Birding Before Brunch); 1 p.m. (Arboretum Sampler); 1:30 p.m. (Family Walk); and 1, 2 and 3 p.m. (Trolley Tours). Arboretum Visitor Center, 1207 Seminole Highway

DETAILS: From 8-10 a.m., enjoy the chorus of returning migrants establishing their nesting territories through song. Birds that are just stopping by on their way north will also be practicing their songs. At 1, explore an Arboretum woodland, wetland and prairie for a sampling of what is happening near the Visitor Center. In addition, free narrated tours leave the Visitor Center at 1, 2 and 3 p.m., and a Family Walk suitable for families with young children takes place from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

SPRING FASHION SHOW: TEXTILE AND APPAREL STUDENTS ASSOCIATION

WHEN AND WHERE: Sunday, May 11, 5 p.m., Great Hall, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: The show takes place at 5 and 7 p.m. The students will be strutting their stuff during this annual runway show of original garments. They will showcase a wide range of creative garments from course work and independent projects.

SNEAK PREVIEW: THE FOOT FIST WAY

WHEN AND WHERE: Monday, May 12, 7:30-11 p.m., Play Circle Theater, Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St.

DETAILS: An uproarious, full-contact comedy featuring one of this year's least likely heroes, this is the first project from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions. This film became a sensation at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007, as audiences fell in love with the seriously self-deluded tae kwon do instructor Fred Simmons, who talks a big, macho game but falls to pieces when his wife betrays him.

ARBORETUM LONGENECKER GARDENS TOUR: FLOWERING CRABAPPLES

WHEN AND WHERE: Wednesday, May 14, 7 p.m., front steps of Arboretum Visitor Center, 1207 Seminole Highway

DETAILS: Ed Hasselkus, professor emeritus of horticulture and curator of the Longenecker Gardens, will concentrate on the Arboretum's collection of flowering crabapples and present highlights in the garden's large lilac collection.

DETAILS: A performance by Concerto Competition winner Nathaniel Wolkstein, violin, highlights a concert featuring members of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and WYSO's Youth Orchestra. Selections include works by Mussorgsky, Dvorak and Shostakovich.
