The strategic hiring initiative is central to UW-Madison's ability to create learning programs, transfer knowledge and help support Wisconsin economic development. The university plans to hire 100 to 150 faculty in new and emerging areas of knowledge that cut across traditional departmental lines. These professors will bring not only their expertise to the university and the state, but also substantial outside resources, such as federal and private grant funding. UW-Madison has already hired 38 new faculty, and several searches are underway. These professors will replace some of the 200 faculty positions lost due to state budget cuts in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
