Karcher named director of risk management

Jeff Karcher, director of risk management at UW-Stevens Point, has been selected as the new director of risk management at UW–Madison.

Karcher has more than 20 years of experience in risk management, environmental health and safety, and compliance in both the public and private sectors.  In addition to serving as UWSP’s director of risk management for the last 15 years, he is an adjunct faculty member for the School of Health Promotion and Human Development at UWSP’s College of Professional Studies.  Prior to his current roles, Karcher served as UWSP’s director of environmental health & safety and held environmental health and safety positions at The Manitowoc Co., Inc. and Kohler Co.

He holds a bachelor’s of business administration degree in management and a master’s degree in occupational safety and health management, both from UW-Whitewater.

“I’m thrilled to have Jeff join UW–Madison and lead the Office of Risk Management,” says Martha Kerner, Associate Vice Chancellor for Business Services.  “His broad-based experience in risk management, environmental health and safety offers an ideal blend of expertise that will be of great benefit to our campus.”

The Office of Risk Management manages UW–Madison’s participation in the State of Wisconsin’s self-funded Workers Compensation, Property and Liability insurance programs.  Additionally, the office processes insurance claims and identifies, evaluates and controls loss exposure face by the University.

Karcher begins his duties at UW–Madison on Sept. 12.
