What do genetics, plant infections, West Nile virus, the human brain and Bach have in common?

Join a group of eclectic UW–Madison scientists and musicians as they explore “The Consequences of Sequence” during the debut of SoundWaves, a new Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery free evening series open to the public that focuses on the relationship between science and music.

On Friday, Dec. 14 between 7 and 9:30 p.m., six university professors, chemist Lloyd Smith; plant pathologist Aurelie Rakotondrafara; veterinarian Kristen Bernard; anesthesiologist Matthew Banks; musician Daniel Grabois; and famed cellist Parry Karp, will discuss the importance of sequence and order in nature.

Following a casual reception with a cash bar located in Discovery’s Town Center, each member of the group will present in the H.F. DeLuca Forum. They will speak on topics such as genetic sequences, infection patterns, viral transmission, human brain waves and musical structure.

UW-Madison cello faculty and member of the Pro Arte Quartet, Parry Karp, will conclude the presentation with a performance of Bach’s Cello Suite in D Minor.

Dinner and casual fare is available in the Discovery building at Steenbock’s with nearby parking is lots 20, 80 and 17.
