Contest gives students chance to name the new south campus union

February 23, 2010

The Associated Students of Madison, working with the Wisconsin Union, will hold a contest to name the new Union building that is scheduled to be finished in 2011.

Students, faculty, and staff are eligible to submit names, but if the winning name is submitted by a student, that student will win a lifetime Union membership. Submissions will be accepted at namethatunion@gmail.com until Friday, March 19.

ASM and the Wisconsin Union have worked together to create a process that ensures students will have a big role in selecting the name of the building.

A committee of mostly students will select the four proposed names they feel reflect the character of the student body and the university as a whole. The New Union Naming Committee will consist of: the ASM Chair,
three ASM Shared Governance appointees, the Union President, two Union President appointees, an alum member of the Memorial Union Building Association, Union staff members (serving without voting rights) and the Dean of Students.

Union Council will approve the list created by the NUNC and then ASM Student Council will approve the list before it goes on the ballot for ASM’s Spring Elections in April where it will be up to the student body to vote for the name they prefer.

The chosen name will then be submitted to Chancellor Biddy Martin.
