A student’s guide to free stuff

September 7, 2016

Just how far can one progress into the semester without having to pay for a meal? These tips will keep you going for quite a while.

  • Come to the student org fair to eat your weight in candy – and learn about some student organizations. Good news: these organizations will tell you about their upcoming events, which will also probably involve free food. It’s like the fun never ends.
  • Thinking about studying abroad? If so, come to the study abroad open house. Like free pizza? If so, come to the study abroad open house.
  • We all scream for Babcock ice cream, particularly when it’s free. Join the Steenbock Ice Cream Social on Thursday, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m. for a taste of Wisconsin’s best and a chance to learn about Steenbock’s activities.

  • Free food is great, but it also helps to be able to get around. Don’t forget to pick up your free bus pass!
  • Didn’t catch enough summer blockbusters? Come to Union South for free movies, like Captain America: Civil War this Friday.
  • Kick off the start of Latino Heritage month with free food (and more!) provided by Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (M.E.Ch.A.).
  • Make clay creatures to decorate your dorm room at the first Free Art Friday.
  • This Friday at 6:30 p.m., the Red Gym will be the scene of giveaways, performances and a chance to learn about the UW-Madison multicultural community.
  • Though free food for consumption will not be handed out, learn how to transform food and henna into political and decorative themes with Interdisciplinary Artist in Residence Meeta Mastani on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 1:45 p.m.  All supplies provided.
  • The DoIt Tech Store and Help Desk offer games, food and prizes at their Welcome Back Tech Fair on Sept. 21.
  • And finally, if you take advantage of all the free food on campus, you may also want to take advantage of the free exercise classes. Come to Union South on Friday for free ballroom dancing lessons.
