Numerous streets around campus will be closed to accommodate the more than 7,400 University of Wisconsin–Madison students moving into university residence halls starting this week.

The big move-in days are Thursday, Aug. 27, Sunday, Aug. 30, and Monday, Aug. 31. Traffic around all residence halls will be extremely heavy on these days. Students are welcome to move in anytime after 8 a.m. on their assigned day.

All lots near residence halls will be used for temporary unloading during move-in. Transportation Services will send information to permit holders who park in campus lots. University staff will help direct traffic.

Motorists should expect some delays and be aware of the following changes to traffic flow:

  • Observatory Drive from Charter Street to Babcock Drive will be restricted to move-in traffic and will be one-way going west.
  • Elm Drive north from Observatory Drive will be restricted to move-in traffic and will be one-way north.
  • Lake Street between Johnson and Dayton streets will be closed to traffic and will be used as a move-in unloading location.
  • Dayton Street from Frances Street to Park Street will be closed to through traffic. Access will be restricted to move-in traffic and will be one-way west.

Additional information and maps of parking and unloading areas during move-in can be found on the Division of University Housing’s website.
