Greenbush housing renovation open house May 28

May 19, 2015 By Käri Knutson

A new program to help people buy and renovate homes in the Greenbush Neighborhood, co-sponsored by UW–Madison, will be discussed at a meeting Thursday, May 28, at 7 p.m. at HotelRED, 1501 Monroe St.

The City of Madison’s Greenbush Housing Renovation Program offers $80,000 to $100,000 to potential homeowners who will buy and restore a rental property and live in the home. Representatives from the city, the Greenbush-Vilas Partnership, contractors and those who have already used the program will be available to answer questions.

“The university is particularly interested in this effort to provide incentives to faculty and staff to live closer to campus so that they can walk, bike or bus to campus rather than rely on their personal, single-occupancy vehicles,” says Gary Brown, director of Campus Planning and Landscape Architecture. Brown represents the UW on the advisory council. “It helps reduce our need for on-campus parking, reduces our impact on the environment and strengthens the vitality of our adjacent neighborhoods.”

The Greenbush-Vilas Partnership is led by representatives of Meriter Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, UW–Madison, Park Bank, Madison Gas and Electric, and the First Weber Foundation. Each of these partners is providing financial support and guidance for this effort. Meriter, St. Mary’s and UW all anchor the area as major employers with an interest in the neighborhoods’ health.

The direction of the partnership is further guided by a group of neighborhood stakeholders on the Greenbush-Vilas Community Advisory Council.

Located just south of campus, the Greenbush and Vilas neighborhoods are home to families, young adults and longtime residents in one of Madison’s most historic districts.
