Experts for media: Facebook turns 10

Millions of people around the world use Facebook, which was first launched on Feb. 4, 2004. The University of Wisconsin–Madison has experts who can discuss the popular social networking site, how people use it and how it has affected the way we communicate. They include:

  • Catalina Toma, assistant professor of communication arts, is an expert on the social and psychological effects of communication technologies. Her areas of research include the effects of Facebook on emotional well-being and self-esteem, and also self-presentation and deception in Facebook profiles.   • Kathleen Bartzen Culver, assistant professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is an expert in digital communication and social media. She can discuss Facebook and how journalists use the social networking site. Culver can be reached at kbculver@wisc.edu, 608-575-4082.
  • Dietram Scheufele, E. Ross Professor and director of graduate studies, life sciences communication, is an expert on new information technologies, including blogs, social media (e.g. Facebook and Twitter) and other online communication.
